Uni.lyf

It's officially been 4 weeks since uni's started.
And nothing exciting is happening.
Oh gosh.
Another boring year.

You pretty much KNOW how pathetic you are
when you take pleasure in staying at the library until ten.
Assignments are starting.
Group presentations.
Online quizzes etc.
(You know you're screwed when you have open book online quizzes…)

Oddly disappointing is the fact that,
I'm not doing so well in my core unit: Dynamic Planet.
Which worries me quite a little.
Because it's made me doubt whether Environmental Science is really my thing ?
I mean,
I literally picked it out of the course guide
'cuz the cover guy for that course looked pretty happy.
But I'll just stay and see how it goes.
Worst case scenario,
I switch to Conservation Biology in my second year.
And for that matter,
you know you're gonna have a hard time finding employment in Australia
when your major has the word "Biology" in it.
Well,
that applies to Science in general.
But I suppose it's rougher for Biology.

Here's a little something for all you stalkers who're slightly curious
on what I'm currently learning :

And I suppose that pretty much wraps my this blog post.
Kinda aimless though =P
I hope something exciting happens 0_0
Hmm…which reminds me,
what DID I blog about last year ?

P.S. Clubbing just ain't for me.
Drinking isn't my thing.
And neither is dancing/sweating on a crowded dance floor.

P.S.S I got a haircut from a new place. Definitely going back. =)

as a fresher

I'm finally back.
And stumped with loads of assignments and reading.
So much work to do.
But I took the afternoon off just to chill a little.
Wouldn't want my brain to burn out now, would I ?
(Even though I'm still thinking about the piles of work I have to do…)

Uni has officially started.
Well, it started 2 weeks ago.
I just got preoccupied with things,
so updating took awhile.
It's good to see SOME activity in my Blogger feed.
To all you bloggers that I've subscribed to,
thank you for making me feel guilty for neglecting my blog.
It is that very guilt that saw the creation of this post.

OK.
So how's uni so far ?
It feels a little weird answering my own question,
but it's been really fun.
Still a little daunting.
But the experience is pretty awesome.

So many new things that you've gotta get used to.
Big campus,
expensive (but crap) food,
different timetables,
clubs and societies, etc.

Oh and before I forget,
this semester I'm doing 4 units.
Dynamic Planet, [Science, Society and Communication],
Japanese 1 and Frontier in Biology.
I think I chose quite an interesting combination.
As an Environmental Science student,
Dynamic Planet is essential.
I only took Biology because it was (highly) recommended.
Japanese is my broadening unit.

A broadening unit is a unit that belongs to a degree unrelated to yours.
So if you're on a Science degree, all units that isn't related to Science
can count as your broadening unit.

I took Japanese because it LOOKED easy.
And interesting.
Like, wouldn't it be cool to be able to practice
your language skills by doing something enjoyable ?
Like watching anime and listening to music ?
Yes it would.
It'd make the learning process much more enjoyable.
Also,
I think it's pretty cool to be able to speak ANOTHER language.
Gotta start afresh since my other languages are cr@p.
And don't forget being able to watch animes
WITHOUT having to wait for the English subs.
On second thought,
I'm getting wayyyy too carried away.
I'm only on Level 1.
And I'm not planning on advancing anywhere further than Level 2.

I won't lie.
I find the lectures pretty hard.
My Japanese lecturer goes through things really fast.
(Katakana in 30 minutes anyone ?)
And not that it's a problem,
but her English isn't very good as well.
Biology can be a bit hard to digest.
Especially with a thousand-page textbook.

But the one unit I'm really worried about is my core unit,
Dynamic Planet.
I'm not sure if there's something I missed,
but I don't seem to understand what my lecturer is talking about.
Other people seem fine though.
She uses terms that are mostly alien to me.
"Plate tectonics" and "Sedimentary rock", anyone ?
Could be the structure of the lecture though.
It feels like she's just conversing casually to us
while switching through slides.
But I can barely understand the aim of the lecture.
And worst yet,
what if I'm the only one who doesn't understand ?
I checked the forums and everyone seems to be doing relatively well.
At least they look like they're having no problems coping.
Oh gosh, I'm screwed.
Some environmental scientist I am =P

Enough of the depressing uni stuff.
Let's talk clubs.
Clubs are fun, aren't they ?
We've got O-Day,
which I'm pretty sure stands for Orientation Day.
And if you haven't figured it out yet.
It's the last day of O-Week.
It's a huge festival where clubs all set up stalls and
try to convince freshers (US !) to join them.
Nothing really stood out for me #nolife
But guess what ?
I ended up joining 6 clubs !
Science Union, Natural Science Club,
Uni Camp 4 Kids (volunteer), Multicultural Student Union,
UWAnimes and Japanese Society.
I'm probably not gonna do/participate in any of them.
Joined the first two out of my personal obligation.
Volunteer clubs are a MUST !
(it makes you look more generous)
And some guy managed to convince me to join the Multicultural one.
Ironic because he's Malaysian as well
#facepalm
The anime club was supposed to be my leisure club.
But they don't look too interesting at their fresher party.
So I joined the JapSoc instead.
And it's pretty fun. And productive.
I can actually practice my introductions in Jap…

So I've got my classes sorted out.
And my clubs too.
Still struggling to strike a balance between study and life.
But I'm sure I'll get there eventually.
Uni's looking good so far.
It's nice to sit on the grassy lawn and talk.
It's sad when you can't find anyone to grab lunch with.
It's frustrating when you're on time for your lecture but there aren't any seats left.
It's embarrassing when your stomach grumbles in the library.
Yup,
uni's definitely looking good.
Of course,
you'd never believe unless I show you evidence.
Unfortunately, I couldn't snap any photos of lectures.
Since my phone camera gives off THE LOUDEST "CLICK" on Earth.
(you'd literally hear it, stop what you're doing and just stare at me)
But here are some that I've managed to take when no one's around.
Unilife so far…

Technical Issue:
When you click on the image,
it'll bring you to my Photobucket album,
and not a blank image-only webpage.
Seems like this was changed by them.
And there's nothing I can do about it =\
(used up my Blogger quota for images)

The big @** clock tower in front of the Uni. Winthrop Tower.

Me and Miss A.R chilling on Oak Lawn.
(oh my hair…)

They LOVE giving us Ice Pop.
It was my lunch that day.

The band performing.
They sang a Kodaline song !
Love the banjo and violins.

The 'Sober ?' club.
Not sure what they do, but I'm pretty sure it involves drinking.

Some random fitness group performing.
Hmm…wonder if I should join ?

Me with REALLY tight straps.
Was really scared of doing rock climbing.

#YOLO I can't believe I actually made it to the TOP !

The faster you pedal,
the more bubble the machine in front of me'll produce.

Doctor Who, anyone ?
Pretty cool. Made by UniGames.

Birds just LOVEEEE to fly in on you when you're having lunch.
Will try to catch the peacock next time.

Me at a Japanese Kaiwa-session.
The magnificent girl is Hazuki-san.

The Japanese Pond.
Notice the birds/magpies (?) and ducks.

Outside the Science Library.
Gave me the "Somewhere Only We Know" vibe.

Another random little bird/magpie (?).
If you look closely, it's chewing on a piece of leaf.

flyingstart

Greetings Everyone.
It is I.
The owner of this blog.
The one who'll be typing more nonsense
on this virtual canvas.

I know I might've been gone for quite a while now.
But I have a perfectly good excuse.
Last week,
omgtheuniinvitedmetoapreorientationcamp
omgthatslikesofunandinsaneicantbelieveiactuallygotin
yaytheuniacknowledgesmeasdisadvantaged
andthebestpartisimmeetingsomeofmypeersevenbeforeorientation
ohifeelsoprivilegedandluckyandthebestpartwellevenbetterpart
wasthattheydletmestayovernightatoneofthecollegehalls
atanactualdormohivealwayswantedtostaythere !
And if you think that was all random gibberish.
It isn't.
Try reading it.

So yeah.
That's the reason why I was gone.
I got to attend UWA's Flying Start program.
Because apparently,
I'm 'disadvantaged'.
And I feel that it IS an honour to be…
disadvantaged.
Okay.
Maybe that isn't the best word to use in this situation but whatever.

Flying Start is a pre-orientation program/camp.
So you get to meet people (your peers) even before orientation.
I suppose it's designed to cater to those
who might not have many people from their school
coming to UWA.
(Oh yes. I'm attending UWA now. #prestige)
I think I qualify 'cause
they're less than 10 of us coming.
If memory serves and all.
So I went.
And I talked.
And I made a fair amount of friends.
Very happy with that.
I'm making good progress, aren't I ?
A group of friends before uni even starts.

Also,
it's been FOREVER since I joined a camp.
Well, PLKN doesn't count.
That was serious business.
It was a matter of life and death.
Heck.
I even had to shoot a few rounds just to make it out of there.
Back to Flying Start,
well,
it was, in a word, awesome.
They showered us with chocolates.
I have NEVER seen chocolates being given out so generously in my life.
And the student leaders were nice.
In fact,
the first person who talked to me was a student leader.
And I had to talk to everyone else.

It ran for 2 nights.
And because most people came from other towns and stuff,
the uni booked rooms for us
to stay in at the residential college.
After I read about that,
I told myself,
I JUST HAD TO GO.
NO MATTER WHAT !
I NEED THAT COLLEGE EXPERIENCE.
#desperate
We got the smallest rooms they had to offer,
BUT I DON'T CARE.
If I can't live at a college,
then this is as good as it'll ever get.
I made myself cozy.
BUT SOME OTHER STUDENTS WERE MAKING
NOISES DOWN THE HALL AND I CAN'T SLEEP IN PEACE LIKE THAT.
GOSH I HAVE TO WAKE UP AT SIX THE NEXT MORNING.
PLEASE PEOPLE, HAVE SOME DECENCY!
Got a good night's sleep.
Surprisingly,
I didn't oversleep.
WOOHOO.
Oh and before I forget,
here's a photo of my room.
(Not really the best picture,
but I was just too excited.)
Not the fanciest of all dorms,
but I'm still extremely grateful
to have this opportunity.

Second day,
talked to more people.
And then everyone went home.
So yeah.
Business as usual.
Well, not exactly.
I know some of my peers now.
So that's great.
Uni's less daunting now.
Wow.
I must say.
The camp was super effective.
I'm not even whining about my endless list of insecurities anymore.

Oh and here's a picture of the view of Perth.
Taken from King's Park.
I know my photography skills are terrible.
But I was just bored.

1month late

I came across an interesting article
on Thought Catalog
a few days ago.

Some random wannabe journalist was writing about
how us Chinese are caught up in our own world.
Simply because we THINK
that the New Years arrive in February,
not January.
Duh.
We're one month late.
Said amateur followed up by saying that
it is their obligation as people to help us realise the truth.
The first of January is the beginning of the new year.
Not the first of February.
I found the article amusing.
She was joking, of course.
Or was she ?
The fact that she was a teacher
gave me the impression that
she wouldn't be writing "funny" articles…
But Oh Well.
Those are her two cents, I suppose.

But enough of the pleasantries.
Let's get back to business.
Firstly,
I'd like to wish everyone a VERY belated
Happy Chinese New Year.
Not Happy New Year.
But Happy CHINESE New Year.
#CHINESE

For those of you who know me personally,
you'd probably see me walking around
The Land Below The Wind.
Which is true.
I wasn't a phantom or illusion.
I was really there.
I went back.
Back to my (summer) home.
I remember I was having conflicting thoughts
about which to call my home
when I was on my plane.
But nevermind that.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
Anyways,
I was back there for 2 weeks.
Yup, a whopping TWO weeks.
And we all know,
TWO is better than one.
And needless to say,
I had a blast.
It was fun all the way to the end.
And although your mileage may vary on this one,
the 'end' part of the trip was just as fun adventurous.

I COULD write and describe everything that I've done.
All 14 days of it.
But you'd just fall asleep,
and I'd fall asleep too.
So I'll just not do that.
Maybe I'll just keep typing this and
see where it brings me…

OK I lied.
I actually stopped after I finished that paragraph.
There're just so many things to distract yourself with on the Internet.
And speaking of Internet,
the one back home (THAT home) was awful.
It was pure torture.
I couldn't even watch videos. =(
Facebook would take forever to load, etc.

Aha ! I didn't get distracted when I finished that sentence.
Yay.
Alright, let's see.
My flight was on Monday.
The good thing was I got there in the morning.
So I had a whole day of activity ahead of me.
I went and paid Miss Prez a visit and we had…
you guessed it : STARBUCKS.
The barista was creeping me out…
Saw a bunch of people working.
Feel guilty about me not having a job.

NEXT DAY.
Woke up early
(feels good because it's productive).
Went out for breakfast with Miss Iiyee.
And FINALLY found out what Ban Mian is.
Do you know what Ban Mian is ?
I didn't.
But now I do.
Here's a picture.

Then I went to the dentist.
A new dentist.
I was scared.
It got worse when I sat down and
the nurse started doing things to my teeth.
WHERE IS THE REAL DENTIST ^%&^$%

Went to close my BSN account…
ended up depositing even more cash into it…

WEDNESDAY !
Headed all the way to 1B with Mr Sarcasm to watch :
FROZEN !
Truth be told,
I didn't know a single thing about this film,
because I'm "too old" for cartoons.
I was wrong.

THURSDAY.
A dessert run.
No,
we don't run for dessert.
We just eat it…
LOTS of it.
It was me, Miss Prez and Miss Scorpio
versus EIGHT (or five) dessert stores.
Meh,
we made it to Shop #3.
Good try.
Maybe next time =P

Went to yamcha with Miss Mole the next day,
after seeing my piano teacher.
She's coming Down Under to study too !!!
Oh wait…it's Melbourne…
nevermind…

Saturday….was fun.
I got a wicked (same old) haircut.
And then it was off to Miss Scorpio's place
for a SLEEPOVER.
Mind you, she lives quite far away.
So it was sorta like a road trip,
consisting of me, Miss Prez and Miss Chancello.
We headed out to 1B for dinner.
GOT LOST HALFWAY.
Found the place,
had dinner and opted to watch "Her".
It was…long.
And to some,
heart-wrenching…
And then we spent the whole night on Omegle.
Thanks Miss Prez ;-)

Got two hours of sleep,
then got ready to drive all the way to Suria.
Met Mr Chancello.
Creeped Mr Chancello out.
Went to Karaoke.
SANG MY HEART OUT.
Went shopping a little.
Caught a flu.
ACT DEAD.

And that was the end of week 1.
Oh look.
I really did end up typing about what happened.
Well,
at least it was quite summarised.
I would've added some photos to
make it more interesting.
But SOMEHOW,
all the photos from my phone
DISAPPPEARED.
_*(&^%^%##$$*((&
I don't really know how/why it happened.
It just did.
And it happened on Sat/Sun…
Hmmm…
(And I tried so hard to force myself to snap a picture every once in a while T__T )

Week #2.
This is when I started getting really lazy.
As per all trips.
I went to try out the October Cafe with the Fifits.
It was nice, I guess.
The owner's Korean,
if that means anything…

Then I had dinner at Upperstar the next day.
With some "old" high school friends.
I'm not sure why,
but we I always end up choosing Upperstar.
But I guess the important part is us seeing each other.
It was last minute though.
So planning was a little rough.
Went to the beach
(cue finding out all photos in phone are lost),
then sent everyone home….
It was gonna end there…
BUT IT DIDN'T.
Went over to Mr Sarcasm's place
and played with his PS3.
UNTIL SEVEN IN THE MORNING.
The morning air was cold.
And I could hear the laughter of kids from the primary school next door.
Ahhh…
The vitality of youth…
But who cares.
Went home.
SLEEEEEEP.
UNTIL FOUR IN THE EVENING.
Oh well.
#YOLO

Thursday : EMO

Friday : EMO (with some shopping)

Saturday : Visited Mr JB.
Went out with him for a little drink.
But EVERYTHING IS CLOSED.
Finally settled for Coffee Bean.
small talk……
Then,
I went to visit Miss Prez…
I was being fashionably late.
There was no food left from the earlier open house.
But since when am I ever hungry ?
Even without food,
I had a great time LMAO-ing.
(lmao was pretty much the best term I can think of to describe this)
Only went home at midnight.
And NO trip is complete with RUSH PACKING.

But I gotta wake up early the next day.
Gotta go out with Miss Scorpio.
(Since I DID promise her.
And a guy never goes back on his word, right ?)
It was (once again),
a long trip.
This time,
I'm driving solo.
But the highways were so fun.
Especially in the morning,
when there aren't any cars nor is it hot.
We stopped by at McD for brekkie.
And OMG I haven't had a Sausage McMuffin in FOREVER.
*tears of joy
I SHOULD'VE GOTTEN MOAR OF IT !
In fact,
this McD branch was REALLY nice.
The building was standalone and clean.
The cashier lady was really nice.
And well…
everything was really clean…
LAWL.
(plus there's a standalone KFC next door too)

Continued on with the car ride.
And we ended up at 1B….at 10am.
The place was still deserted.
So we killed some time by talking.
And then SHOPPING.
You know how shopper look in TV ?
Walking around fashionably in slow motion,
while holding 5 bags on each hand.
Well, WE felt like that.
She bought stuff she liked.
I bought stuff I liked.
We both end up happy and broke.
Yup, happy.
I also bumped into Miss Jay and Mr Cous.
They were alone…
Hmmm….
After that,
I sent her home.
Said my final good-byes.
And rushed home.
I was trying to drive fast,
even though cars surrounded me
from every direction.
If I got back late,
well,
I'd be in big trouble.
Worst care scenario ?
I miss my flight.
Oh wait,
that's a good thing.
(To the taxi guy who's lane I cut into in the middle of a traffic light at Lintas.
I'm truly sowi.
I didn't mean for it to turn out that way…)

Got home.
Got changed.
Headed to the airport.
(OMG TAIWANESE INVASION)
And never looked back.
I had fun =)
Oh.
And this is what you SHOULD call me now --->
Cheers !

scor.ch

I wasn't thinking of updating.
But I'm just bored.
Truly, sincerely bored.

It's 44 degree Celcius right now.
No, I'm not trolling.
The streets really do feel like an oven.
You know that feeling when you open an oven,
and hot air blows right at your face.
Well,
apply the same wind to your entire body
while you try to brace it and move forward.

I'm at the library.
I was SUPPOSED to do a module on my online course.
But guess what ?
Trashy public WiFi is trashy.
Even if it's the State Library.
It really depends on the mood of the network,
I guess.
Sometimes it's good,
sometimes it's not.
I guess today's just an unlucky day.
That or the heat blew the modem up.

It's a really different atmosphere.
The library, I mean.
Back when we had WACE,
you'd be lucky to find a table.
Study groups !
Study groups everywhere !
Of course,
we all know you don't join a study group to STUDY.
Try as you may,
the thirst for humans to crave interactions through endless talking cannot be easily quenched.

Now, the place is dead.
Well, actually there ARE still people.
80% (I'm not kidding) of them are Asian.
Doing work.
Wait, what kinda work ?
I'm curious.
It's still summer.
Or are they uni students ?
But they're having summer vacations too.
Studying up for IELTS perhaps.
Whatever... (read: I REALLY wanna know !)

bucket.s for thought.s

According to Urban Dictionary,
a bucket list is :
A list of things to do before you die…

I think everyone should make/have one.
That way we won't have to put up with
"Oh such regrets" drama
on someone's hospital bed.

Also,
I think it's really fun to have.
Really fun to make.
And I guess
it stops us from being lazy and
wasting what little time we have.

I'm not sure if I'll even remember this list in ten years time.
But for now,
I just wanna have some fun.
Think about the infinite possibilities of my future.

re - .res

Happy New Year guys !
Welcome to 2014.
And that's pretty much all I have to say for this update.
See.
I can do short posts too !

But wait...
New years wouldn't be complete.
Not without a review of my 2013 New Year Resolution...

(image taken from http://tools.blog.globalgiving.org/2013/12/11/2014-campaign-calendar-sneak-peek/)

Let's take a look shall we ?

  • Achieve an ATAR of 80 or above....
Resolution Met.
In fact,
I got 98.8 !
That's INSANE.
Didn't see that coming.
But I'm glad to see that my "hardwork" has paid off.
So now I'm off to uni.  =)

  • Don't drink/smoke/do drugs...
Resolution...FAILED...
I bet you're surprised.
Don't worry.
I am too.
Broke this one by going to a club for the first time.
And it was in the middle of my WACE.
#WACECanWait
All I can say is,
I think I have low tolerance... *wink wink

  • ...Coke is fine, though...
Great.
Looks like I got my priorities all messed up.
Because I actually made it through entire year
(well, since Lent anyway)
without any carbonated/fizzy drinks.
Just wish I could've said the same about alcohol...

  • Get a job...
I THOUGHT I would.
But it looks like I totally crashed and burned out "studying".
Oh well.
NEXT YEAR !
For sure...

  • Retain frienships...
Resolution Met.
Although I should've been more specific.
Well...hmm...
I'm not really sure about this one.
I really gave myself an ambiguous one there.
But at least I still Skype with people back home, right ?
That's gotta count !

  • be happy =3
Once again.
Another ambiguous, open resolution.
But hey,
life's too short to stay moody or sad.
And just imagine all those people who're less fortunate.
I'd say this year's made me fairly happy.
My results made me really happy though,
sooo....
RESOLUTION MET.

I guess I'm quite satisfied.
I've met most of my resolutions.
Time for some new ones...

  • Get good grades in my first year at Uni (keeping my options open for post-grads)
  • GET A JOB (seriously)
  • Don't get drunk (just imagine all those secrets stored safe in my head !)
  • Actually finish reading all the novels I have !
  • Make new friends in Uni (oh gawd that sounds scary already....)
  • Retain friendships (all of them, some from home, some from Selangor, some from this year...)
  • be happy =3 -er than this year (because we should always try to smile more often)
  • Get at least 100 blog posts out before 1/1/2015
  • Try more new things (you won't have enough time when you're all grown up)

I think that should suffice.
Now normally I'd do what I did last year :
list out songs that've been of a significance to me this year.
Sadly,
I can't really recall any
because I've been stuck in libraries for the entire year.
And any song that I like has been listened to 100 times
while I was there.
But I'll try to name some anyway.

  • Love Like War - All Time Low
  • Best Night - Justice Crew
  • Somewhere Only We Know - Cover by Michelle Chamuel
  • We Come Running - Youngblood Hawke
  • Lakehouse - Of Monsters and Men
  • Something I Need - OneRepublic
  • Life In Color - OneRepublic
  • All American Boy - Steve Grand
  • Demons - Imagine Dragons
  • Story of My Life - One Direction
  • Closer - Tegan and Sara
  • Angels - Owl City
  • Woman I Love - Jason Mraz
  • Change - Taylor Swift
  • Homeward Bound/HOME - Glee Cast
  • Dementia - Owl City
  • It's A Beautiful Day - Michael Buble
  • The Last Time - Taylor Swift ft. Gary Lightbody
  • Test Drive - How To Train Your Dragon OST

That's...quite a long list.
Looks like I really went all out with my music this year.
Well, I had to.
It made my endless hours at the library not-so-endless.
Well,
that's it from me.
And yes,
I do realize I've made this short post...long...
But hey !
It's the New Years.
And New Years wouldn't be complete
without a long post...

I'll stop here...
See you guys next time !
